About the 3G shutdown
From the end of 2025 - early 2026, New Zealand’s mobile operators (2degrees, One NZ and Spark) have completed the shutdown of their 3G networks. This big change is part of a global upgrade to 4G and 5G technology, to deliver a more reliable experience for consumers and future-proof connectivity.
Any 3G-reliant devices will no longer work now that 3G networks are switched off, including for emergency 111 calls. The TCF and mobile operators want to make sure New Zealanders know about this change, and have the right support needed to stay connected into the future.

Who is affected?
Most New Zealanders are already using 4G or 5G devices and won’t need to take any action. Anyone still using a 3G-reliant phone, tablet or wearables, medical alarms, security or tracking alarms and other IoT business devices will need to update or upgrade their device for 4G compatibility.
All mobile provider networks across Aotearoa have now been shutdown, including smaller operator brands powered by the three main telcos (2degrees, One New Zealand and Spark). It is best to speak to your mobile provider directly if you are unsure whether you are affected or need to take action.
